Rep. Shri Thanedar (D-Mich.) managed to piss off a lot of MAGA supporters on Wednesday with a social media post about the death of “Dilbert” cartoonist Scott Adams. The Michigan congressman’s post referred to Adams as “a tortured and struggling cartoonist,” and claimed his death on Tuesday was “reportedly due to the anger he caused others through his massive, unyielding, and incurable affliction with SHRI DERANGEMENT SYNDROME.”But there was a catch: Thanedar’s post was actually a cut-and-paste of comments Donald Trump made on his TruthSocial platform in the wake of film director Rob Reiner’s death last month. He made the point behind the post clear by asking, “Am I doing this right MAGA, or is it only OK when Trump does it?”Thanedar’s post also referenced when many newspapers canceled “Dilbert” in February 2023, after Adams said the “best advice I would give to white people is to get the hell away from Black people,” while adding, “Just get the fuck away. Wherever you have to go, just get away.”Scott Adams, a tortured and struggling cartoonist, has passed away, reportedly due to the anger he caused others through his massive, unyielding, and incurable affliction with SHRI DERANGEMENT SYNDROME.Am I doing this right MAGA, or is it only OK when Trump does it? https://t.co/WJ7xU7VVRU— Congressman Shri Thanedar (@RepShriThanedar) January 14, 2026After Reiner and his wife, Michele Reiner, were found dead with knife wounds in their California home in December, Trump baselessly claimed the deaths were actually caused by “the anger he caused others through his massive, unyielding, and incurable affliction with a mind crippling disease known as TRUMP DERANGEMENT SYNDROME.”Although some people might consider turnabout to be fair play, those folks apparently aren’t MAGA members. As a result, Thanedar’s post was condemned by supporters of Adams and Trump, while others simply noted the double standard. Thanedar called out the hypocrisy in a reply to a post by Democratic pundit Adam Mockler.Since the 68-year-old Thanedar entered Congress in 2023, he has apparently earned a reputation for, as fellow Michigan Rep. Rashida Tlaib (D) put it, spending more time “posting memes” than being focused on his district.
